Funding Doubles to Expand Tuberculosis Programs Nationwide
The Department of Health revealed a ₱4.2 billion budget for tuberculosis interventions within the 2026 National Expenditure Program. This figure is almost double what was allocated for 2025. This boost encourages the spread of diagnostic technologies and improves access to treatment.
The financing, according to officials, is intended to improve healthcare services at the grassroots level. This investment would also assist the Philippines in its efforts to cut down on tuberculosis-related deaths and infections by the year 2030.
AI-Powered Chest X-Rays Revolutionize Detection Efforts
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa announced the countrywide rollout of ultra-portable AI chest X-rays, a move designed to speed up the identification of tuberculosis. This method incorporates WHO-approved nucleic acid amplification tests, allowing for instant confirmation of cases.
These instruments expedite diagnosis, a boon particularly in rural regions. They empower healthcare personnel to pinpoint infections sooner, enabling treatment to begin before more serious issues develop.

Shortened Treatments Improve Patient Recovery Rates
The Department of Health announced new all-oral treatment regimens for drug-resistant TB, significantly reducing the length of therapy from the previous 2 years down to only 6 months. Patient adherence and the likelihood of successful therapy are both boosted by these advancements.
Children with non-severe tuberculosis also benefit from shorter treatment plans, namely the 2HRZE/2HR method, which lasts 4 months instead of the usual 6. This change eases the load for both families and those who offer healthcare.
Preventive Treatment Enrollment Surges by Over 50 Percent
Preventive measures picked up steam in 2024. The Department of Health (DOH) noted a 50% increase in enrollment for Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment (TPT). The expansion was driven by shorter TPT regimens and more extensive contact tracking efforts.
The program’s expansion to encompass close contacts of drug-resistant TB patients represents a significant advancement. This move is a crucial step toward universal deployment and improved management of outbreaks.
Community Campaigns Drive Early Detection Awareness
Public awareness initiatives, like the “TPTodo Caravans,” are designed to encourage preventative treatment and prompt medical check-ups. These efforts lie at the heart of the Philippine Acceleration Action Plan for Tuberculosis.
The campaign, a collaborative effort including government bodies, civil society organizations, and the commercial sector, aims to enhance public awareness of tuberculosis prevention. It also seeks to promote prompt and effective treatment across the country.
WHO Partnership Strengthens Global and Local Impact
Dr. Eunyoung Ko, the WHO’s acting representative, commended the Philippines’ advancements, deeming them essential for achieving worldwide TB eradication targets. He reiterated the World Health Organization’s backing at both the national and local levels.
Progress is already apparent in pilot regions such as Guimaras, a place poised to be the Philippines’ inaugural TB-free island. Ongoing teamwork is key to maintaining momentum all the way until 2030.
