Greens Win Baden Wurttemberg Election by a Small Margin
The Green Party of Germany won the Baden-Württemberg state election on Sunday by a small margin. The final results showed that the Greens got 30.2% of the votes in the whole region. The CDU, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, came in second with 29.7%.
After a tough campaign, the vote was a surprising comeback for the environmentalist party. Baden-Württemberg is an important industrial area with more than 11 million people living there. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are two of the biggest car companies that have their headquarters in the state.

Cem Özdemir’s Campaign Gives the Green Party a Boost
Cem Özdemir, the Green candidate, was a key part of the party’s success at the polls. The experienced politician used to be Germany’s agriculture minister and a member of the federal parliament for a long time. His campaign was mostly about his experience as a leader and his practical policies.
Özdemir stressed a moderate political approach that would appeal to the conservative voters in Baden-Württemberg. The strategy was different from the Greens’ more progressive image on a national level. This positioning helped get support from people who don’t usually vote for environmentalists.
CDU Doesn’t Do Well Even Though They Had an Early Election Edge
At first, it looked like the center-right CDU would win the election in Baden-Württemberg. Earlier polls in the campaign showed that the party had a big lead. But as the election got closer, the gap got a lot smaller.
Manuel Hagel was chosen by the party to run for governor of the state. Hagel wasn’t as well-known on a national level as Özdemir, who had more experience. Analysts say that the difference may have changed how voters saw things.

Far-Right AfD Gains Significant Electoral Support
The Alternative for Germany party, which is far-right, did very well in the election. Compared to the last regional election, AfD almost doubled its share of the vote. The party got 18.8% of the vote in the end.
The growth is in line with national trends that have favored the party in recent elections. The AfD has gained more support, especially in eastern Germany. The party wants to win its first state government leadership later this year.
Social Democrats Get Bad Results in State Vote
During the election, the Social Democratic Party of Germany lost a lot of support from voters. According to the final results, the party only got 5.5% of the vote. This was about half of what it had gotten in the past.
The party that governs the country with the CDU was especially upset with the outcome. Analysts say that voters may have been unhappy with the state of the economy. Germany’s economy has had a hard time getting back on track lately.
Coalition Government Expected to Continue in State
Even though the election was close, the Greens and CDU are likely to form a coalition government. For about 10 years, the 2 parties have run Baden-Württemberg together. Political analysts think that talks will go on to keep that partnership going.
If confirmed, Cem Özdemir would be the first Turkish-born person to be a state governor in Germany. His leadership would be a turning point in the history of German regional politics. Soon, talks about a coalition are set to start.
Election Results Show Tough Year Ahead for German Parties
This year’s Baden-Württemberg election is the first of 5 regional elections. The next elections will be a test for political parties in many German states. There are likely to be a lot of close races.
Political experts say that the results could change the direction of national politics before the next election. Chancellor Merz is under pressure to make the economy work better at home. People who watch politics think that issues at home will be the main focus of the next campaigns.
