Government Agencies Support Venue Modernization
Patrick Gregorio, chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, said that close cooperation between the PSC, Philta, the Manila city government, and public works authorities was to blame. He said that hundreds of workers worked on upgrades every day to make sure that the courts, seating, lighting, and other facilities met the standards of the international federation.
Gregorio also said that PSC was quick to give money to the project, which was in line with the country’s long-term sports development goals. He said that investing in infrastructure is necessary to raise the level of competition for Filipino athletes.
Tennis Federation Highlights Long Term Development Goals
According to John Rey Tiangco, secretary general of the Philippine Tennis Association, local qualifying matches showed that the venue was almost done and ready to play. He was very sure that all the work that needed to be done would be done before the tournament’s official opening ceremonies.
Tiangco said that the event was more than just a one-time sporting event for international exposure; it was a long-term investment. He said that long-term tournaments would help local players get better by playing against better players from around the world.
