Boris Johnson Brings Real-Life Politics to School
This semester, Boris Johnson, a former Prime Minister of the UK, is teaching a special political science course at the University of Miami. This gives students a chance to meet one of the most well-known figures in modern UK politics. The course Special Topics in Public Administration, Policy, and Law looks at leadership, governance, and world events.
Johnson’s first lecture at the Whitten Learning Center was full of funny and interesting stories about his role in the Brexit campaign in the UK. More than 170 students were captivated by his trademark humor and storytelling. The session gave young scholars a rare chance to talk directly with a former world leader who helped shape the political history of Europe.

Students Enthralled by Johnson’s Personality and Perspective
Students said that Johnson was charming, insightful, and surprisingly funny, which made lessons about government more interactive. Lauren Montgomery, a classics and international studies major, said she was pleasantly surprised by how interesting Johnson was. She said that his voice and mannerisms brought stories she had only read in print to life.
Julia Marsala, a political science major, agreed with what Johnson said about Brexit, calling it riveting and praising his ability to make complicated political issues seem easy to understand and fun. A lot of students said they were looking forward to his last three guest lectures this semester.
Recounting the Road to Brexit
Johnson told the story of the dramatic events that led up to the 2016 Brexit referendum, in which 52% of UK voters chose to leave the EU. He talked about how important it was for him to be a public supporter of the Vote Leave campaign and how politically brave it was to go against the mainstream at the time.
Johnson called the referendum a conflict between direct and representative democracy and said that the result was the biggest vote for any proposition in modern British politics. He said that the parliamentary opposition that followed put the country in crisis, but in the end, it led to a new definition of national sovereignty.

From London Mayor to Prime Minister
