Millions Of Nepalis Head To Polling Stations

Almost 19 million people in the country can vote in the national election. Across the country, polling places opened early in the morning. Before the polls officially opened, there were long lines outside voting centers.

Election officials think that at least 65% of people will vote. The high turnout shows that people are excited after last year’s political upheaval. A lot of voters say they want the election to bring about real change.

Parliament Seats Chosen Through Two Voting Systems

The election in Nepal will decide who will be in the country’s House of Representatives. Voters choose 165 lawmakers directly for the lower chamber. Proportional representation is used to fill the other 110 seats.

Based on how many votes they get, political parties choose more lawmakers. This system lets smaller parties get seats in parliament. The final makeup of the 275-seat legislature is decided by the combined process.

Balendra Shah Becomes a Major Political Opponent

Balendra Shah, the mayor of Kathmandu, is now one of the most well-known people running for office. The rapper-turned-politician, who is 35 years old, is in charge of the National Independent Party. His campaign has picked up steam as people are unhappy with traditional political leaders.

In 2022, Shah won the election for mayor of Kathmandu. Later, he played a big role in the youth-led protests that made the government step down. His popularity has grown a lot among younger voters who want changes in politics.

Campaign Focuses On Health And Education Reform

Shah talked a lot about how he would improve health care and education for poor communities during his campaign. He says that better public services are necessary to lower inequality. A lot of voters across the country have been affected by these problems.

Supporters say his platform is a break from the way things have been done in party politics for decades. During the election, a lot of people came to his campaign rallies. Analysts say that his movement shows that people are becoming more unhappy with the major political parties.

Election Seen As Three Way Political Contest

Most people think of the election as a 3-way race between different political groups. Shah’s National Independent Party goes up against 2 parties that have been in power for a long time in Nepal’s political system. The Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal are 2 of them.

Both of the traditional parties have loyal voters all over the country. But younger voters have strongly backed the new party. People who are watching say that the final result could change the political landscape in Nepal.

Next Government Faces Major National Challenges

There will be a lot of problems for the next government, no matter which party it is. After last year’s protests, the government needs to respond to calls for change. People still expect the government to fight corruption and make things better.

Nepal’s leaders also need to be careful about how they deal with powerful countries next door. Both India and China have a big impact on the region’s politics and economy. The next administration will need to be very good at managing these relationships.
