Humane World For Animals Expands Global Rescue Efforts Across Disaster Zones
Humane World for Animals has intensified its global disaster response operations, deploying teams across Mexico, Alaska, and the Caribbean to rescue, treat, and support animals affected by severe weather events. The organization’s international teams are responding to a growing wave of disasters caused by floods, typhoons, and hurricanes in late 2025.
Led by Gaia Bonini, Director of International Disaster Response, the team completed a deployment to western Alaska, where typhoon-related flooding devastated multiple communities. Simultaneously, preparations began for Hurricane Melissa response efforts across the Caribbean, underscoring the group’s expanding reach and commitment.
Flood Relief Mission In Mexico
In mid-October 2025, unprecedented rainfall caused massive flooding across five states in Mexico, including Veracruz. Humane World for Animals’ Latin America disaster team, working with local veterinarians and community partners, provided critical relief to affected animals.
Over several days, the team treated nearly 500 animals and distributed more than 738 kilograms of food to displaced families and shelters. Many animals were found foraging through contaminated floodwaters, facing risks of infection and disease.
“After the water receded, entire neighborhoods were left coated in mud,” said Gaia Bonini. “Caring for these animals protects both their health and the safety of the entire community.”
Emergency Deployment To Alaska
Before the Mexico operation concluded, additional Humane World for Animals responders traveled to Bethel, Alaska, to assist Bethel Friends of Canines in rescuing dogs stranded by Typhoon Halong. Volunteers provided veterinary care and emergency shelter work to stabilize animals affected by widespread flooding.
Disaster response manager Felipe Márquez Muñoz noted that climate-driven disasters are increasing in scale and frequency. “Entire neighborhoods were submerged,” he said. “We saw cows stranded on rooftops and dogs coated in oil. These are heart-wrenching scenes.”

Coordinated Response In The Caribbean
Meanwhile, the organization prepared a simultaneous deployment to Jamaica to assist animals and families impacted by Hurricane Melissa. Bonini and her team will coordinate with local groups to deliver veterinary support and distribute emergency supplies.
The group’s approach emphasizes collaboration with local shelters and government agencies to ensure long-term recovery and sustainable animal welfare solutions.
Addressing A Global Pattern Of Climate Disasters
Humane World for Animals highlighted that these missions reflect a growing global crisis. Natural disasters—driven by rising sea temperatures and extreme weather patterns—are becoming more frequent and destructive. In 2023 alone, the organization responded to wildfires in Maui and Greece, floods in Delhi and Beijing, and earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.
In 2024, the team assisted communities affected by Hurricanes Helene, Milton, and John, as well as flood and cyclone emergencies in India, Vietnam, Nepal, and Ecuador. This year, it also pledged $1 million in wildfire aid to Los Angeles following widespread property destruction.
Humanitarian Impact And Community Support
During the recent Mexico deployment, many survivors shared powerful stories of resilience. One woman recalled carrying her 30-kilogram Rottweiler to the roof as waters rose around her home. “That bond between people and animals gives them hope,” said Felipe Márquez.
By offering veterinary services, food, and emotional support, the organization helps preserve that connection and rebuild trust in affected communities.
Sustained Commitment To Global Rescue
As disasters grow more severe, Humane World for Animals continues to invest in training, logistics, and rapid-response coordination to meet urgent needs. Local veterinarians in Veracruz are now partnering with the organization to provide ongoing care for flood-affected animals.
