BYD Unveils Ultra Fast Charging Blade Battery Tech

BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle company, has shown off a new battery that can charge much faster. The company says that its Blade Battery 2.0 can go from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes. This kind of performance could make it much easier for people all over the world to switch to electric cars.

The Yangwang U7, BYD’s luxury sedan, will be the first car to have the new battery system. Under the best conditions, it is said that it takes about 9 minutes to fully charge to almost full capacity. If proven in real-world tests, the technology could be as fast as gasoline vehicles at refueling.

Flash Charging Stations Required for Maximum Charging Speed

But the record-breaking charging speed only works when the device is plugged into one of BYD’s own flash charging stations. These special stations give the vehicle battery about 1.5 megawatts of electrical power. Right now, standard public charging networks can’t provide power at such high levels.

Most fast charging stations in the US and Europe can give out up to 350 kilowatts of power at their highest settings. Newer experimental installations may be able to reach 500 kilowatts, but they are still not very common on public networks. Because of this, drivers who use regular chargers would have to wait longer for their devices to charge.

Battery Uses Cheaper Lithium Iron Phosphate Chemistry

Lithium iron phosphate chemistry, also known as LFP technology, is what the Blade Battery 2.0 uses. This battery doesn’t use expensive materials like cobalt and nickel that are used in other designs. So, the cost of making it is still much lower than that of other battery chemistries.

It is currently thought that making LFP battery packs costs about $81 per kilowatt hour. Nickel manganese cobalt batteries that are similar usually cost around $128 per kilowatt hour. Automakers may be able to make electric cars at lower prices if production costs go down.

Fast Charging May Reduce Electric Vehicle Range Anxiety

One problem with LFP batteries in the past is that they didn’t store as much energy as other lithium technologies. A battery with a lower density stores less energy for its size and weight. Because of this, many Western car companies only use LFP batteries in less expensive electric vehicles.

BYD’s plan is different because it focuses on charging speed instead of maximum energy storage. Drivers might not worry as much about how far they can drive if their cars charge very quickly. So, infrastructure for fast charging could help ease people’s range anxiety.

Yangwang U7 Sedan Offers Long Driving Range

The Yangwang U7 luxury sedan with the new battery is said to have great driving range numbers. Tests done according to China’s CLTC standard show that the car can go more than 1,000 kilometers on a full charge. But this way of testing usually gives higher estimates than the standards set by the American EPA.

In the real world, driving conditions might mean that the range is closer to 400 miles per charge. Even at that level, the car can still compete with many high-end electric cars that are currently on the market around the world. Rapid charging capability may further enhance practicality for long distance travel.

BYD Grows Its Network of Super Fast Charging Stations

BYD is quickly adding more flash charging stations to support its new battery technology. The company says that there are already about 4,200 flash charging stations in China. By the end of the year, plans call for building 16,000 more stations.

Some stations will also have big battery systems that are meant to make electrical grids less stressed. These storage units let stations store electricity and quickly release it when they need to charge. These kinds of systems help deal with the huge amount of power that megawatt charging needs.

Technology Highlights Growing Competition in the Global EV Market

The news comes at a time when electric vehicle makers around the world are facing more competition. Tesla, Li Auto, Xpeng, Xiaomi, and Zeekr are just a few of the companies that are still fighting for the top spot in this fast-growing market. One of the most important areas of competition is in charging technology improvements.

Investors, including Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, have been interested in BYD in the past. In 2008, the investment firm bought a big stake in the company. It sold its stake in 2025. Today, BYD is still one of the biggest makers of electric cars in the world.
